35 years of nantes tram 2/2
By Victor Denis
At the end of the 80's, Jean-Marc Ayrault, the socialist mayor of Nantes, decided to build the second tram line. After the success of the first line, there was no question.
The first line was from east to west, and the second line was built from Commerce (north), to Neustrie (south) with a connection to line 1. Shortly after, Nantes extended it to 50 Otages, in 1992. After 1 year of work, the third part was opened up to Ecole Centrale/ Orvault.
In 1994, after visiting the north part of the city, President François Mitterand took the tram from Ecole Centrale to Place du Cirque.
Flash forward to 2000, the third line was inaugurated. It went from Plaisance to Hotel Dieu, where there is a 3rd track where the tram parks.
In 2007, the 3rd line was extended to Neustrie, following along the path of Line 2. The new terminus of Line 2 became Pont Rousseau.
Now, the line 1 runs from François Mitterand to Beaujoire, and from Ranzay to Jamet.
The line 2 runs from Orvault-Grand Val to Pont Rousseau and 1 tram on 2 stop at Hôtel Dieu.
The line 3 goes from Marcel Paul to Neustrie.
But the Nantes tram evolution is not finished! The city plans to construct new lines,
from the new hospital to Bouaye and more…
